Animals in general can be really picky about the surfaces they defecate on. If they like to use the wheel, and it's plastic, putting a piece of plastic in the cage could act as a designated pooping area.

That’s actually a really good idea, but I don’t mind them going on their wheel it means there’s less poo around the cage :P
