Actually, the hedgehog breeder I got my hedgehog from said that hamster balls aren't terrible for hedgehogs as long as you watch them carefully.

Generally speaking, if the ball’s slits are small enough to prevent their toes or nails from getting caught, then they’re too small for proper ventilation. Also, hedgies use the bathroom a lot and whenever is convenient for them, if they go in the ball, it can get thrown it and not only make a mess but there have been a few incidents where fecal matter gets into their airways.
Apparently, a lot of breeders are saying it’s ok, but the general consensus is still No. Play pins are better suited for hedgies.
