Common Errors I see on the Hedgehog Tags.

Mesh wheels or cage bottoms: Wire or mesh wheels and cage bottoms are extremely bad for a hedgehog’s feet. Their toes and nails can get caught in the grating and break. The Fix: Buy a cage with a sold bottom or make a bottom of some sort. For mesh wheels, replace them with a sturdy, solid bottomed wheel such as a Carolina Storm Bucket Wheel, which can be found here.

Ramps and Ledges: Hedgehogs have horrible depth perception and are not meant for climbing, which can result in them falling off ramps and ledges. Also, it’s commonly speculated that hedgehogs climb cages when they’re not getting enough simulation. The Fix: Either purchase a hedgie safe cage, or close off and secure any ramps or ledges.

Hamsterballs: Hamsterballs are a no-no for play time. The small slits in the ball can catch on a hedgie’s nail. Contrariwise, if the slits are sufficiently small enough not to catch hedgehog’s nails, then they’re too small for proper ventilation. The Fix: Set up a secure play pin for your hedgie to play in, provide toys, tubes and tunnels. Not only is it better than sticking them in a ball, it’s more interactive for both of you.
